چکیده

Wire failure in aircraft can be attributed to several factors and the assessment of the risk of wire failure is becoming an increasingly important task. This paper will discuss the results of an actual experiment to use the paired-comparison technique for expert judgment to develop a relationship for the probability of wire failure as a function of influencing factors in an aircraft environment. The reasons for using this technique are two-fold. First, the failure probability depends on many variables including wire gauge, vibration, environmental condition etc. In addition, the wire failure data is sparse and fitting this data to a complex failure function is a nontrivial task that may involve a host of assumptions that may not be provable. . We describe a method for using actual failure data and the results from a paired comparison to populate the model parameters. In the approach, paired comparison data from select environments is used to obtain failure rate estimates for the candidate environments. Next, a functional relationship for wire failure as a function of the environments is constructed using a proportional hazards model. A regression model is fit from the failure rate estimates to the environmental variables and is used as an estimate of the failure response surface. This technique is being investigated as a means to generate failure rates for an Electrical Wiring Interconnection System Risk Assessment software tool currently being developed for the FAA Tech Center.

A Bayesian paired comparison approach for relative accident probability assessment with covariate information

 One of the challenges managers face when trying to understand complex, technological systems (in their efforts to mitigate system risks) is the quantification of accident probability, particularly in the case of rare events. Once this risk information has been quantified, managers and decision makers can use it to develop appropriate policies, design projects, and/or allocate resources that w...

Feasibility Demonstration of an Aircraft Performance Risk Assessment Model

This paper presents the development of an Aircraft Performance Risk Assessment Model (APRAM). The model consists of a set of software tools that processes aircraft data available from Digital Flight Data Recorders (DFDRs) and Quick Access Recorders (QARs) to identify precursor events and compute incident and accident risks. The feasibility version of the generic risk assessment model is limited...

Paired Comparison: A User Perspective

Paired comparison is an expert based judgment estimation technique. The method reduces individual judgment errors by requiring multiple pair-wise comparisons of relative sizes. Observations made in an academic environment shows that paired comparison produces more consistent results across estimators compared to ad-hoc methods and planning poker. A tool is introduced, which implements a more ef...

A Bayesian Model for Rare Event Risk Assessment Using Expert Judgment about Paired Scenario Comparisons

When challenged with understanding complex, technological systems, managers often use analysis to characterize risk. Managers use this information to design projects, develop policy, and allocate resources in order to mitigate system risk. This paper presents a Bayesian risk analysis methodology for combining expert judgment with the manager’s prior system knowledge to allow identification of r...

Comparison of Cramer classification between Toxtree, the OECD QSAR Toolbox and expert judgment.

The Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC) is a pragmatic approach in risk assessment. In the absence of data, it sets up levels of human exposure that are considered to have no appreciable risk to human health. The Cramer decision tree is used extensively to determine these exposure thresholds by categorizing non-carcinogenic chemicals into three different structural classes. Therefore, assi...
